From Scientist to CEO: The Experiment That Changed My Life
"You'll never guess what was hanging on my wall before I became an entrepreneur..."
My biochemistry degree.
Yep - I was supposed to be a doctor.
Or maybe a lawyer (I was in law school at night).
The "safe" path was all mapped out:
Study hard. Get the degrees. Build a respectable career.
But something kept nagging at me.
While working in pharmaceutical research, I spent my lunch breaks in the library.
Not reading medical journals - but studying business magazines.
My dad owned a small deli where I worked growing up.
He taught me something I'll never forget:
"Everyone wears an invisible sign that says 'I want to feel special.'"
That lesson was worth more than any degree.
It hit me: I didn't want to study business. I wanted to build one.
So at 29, I left my "secure" path to start a company.
My supervisor said I was crazy.
My colleagues thought I was throwing it all away.
They offered me a free PhD degree.
But here's what I knew:
Sometimes your calling finds you when you're busy making other plans and others happy like I was.
The scientist in me never left though - I just started experimenting with business growth instead of chemical compounds.
What unexpected turns led you to where you are today?
